It’s not here. It is not missing. v2 from Kjetil Austvoll-Dahlgren on Vimeo.

“It’s not here. It is not missing.” is an interactive installation exploring the negative space of perceived reality, seeking to sensitize the visitor to the subtracted parts of the whole.
It uses the metaphor of shadows as masks for visuals as well as sound.

It cycles through two states, a subtractive state and an additive state, complementing each other as two approaches to the same theme: the small parts that make up the whole. The subtractive state is meditative and subtle, while the additive state is brash and immediate.

The installation is built with Arduino (arduino.cc/) and Processing (processing.org/). The music is by Sindre Husebø.

The basic setup:
10 LDR’s (light dependent resistors)
2 arduinos
2 projectors (minimum)
1 computer (with a graphics card capable of running multiple screens)
Space -> The installation utilizes the room it is in, every setup is unique.

Title:
“It’s not here. It is not missing.”



It is an audiovisual interactive installation exploring the negative space of perceived reality, seeking to sensitize visitors to the subtracted parts of thee whole.



I use projectors as light sources, and LDRs (light dependent resistors) as sensors. Parts of the soundtrack are connected to the different LDRs, so that when a visitor block out the light source he/she not only masks the visual plane, but also the part of the soundtrack that corresponds to the sensor.

Features under developement:

  • States_ The installation will have different states (audio, visual and behavioral) that it cycles through. The different states will be triggered by things like degree of activity and time.
  • Visuals_ The round spots in the current version will be replaced by more appropriate graphics, a visual representation of the sound.
  • Space_ The installation will be spread over at least two walls, allowing for crossing beams of light and enhanced experience.
